Maddie Olexa
Madelynne is a second-year medical student at Duke University School of Medicine. She graduated from Duke University in 2022, where she studied Neuroscience and Biology and played on the club volleyball team. During undergrad, she completed a thesis establishing and characterizing a mouse model of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma–associated chronic neuropathic itch. She co-authored a textbook chapter on neuroimmune interactions in acute and chronic itch. After graduation, she spent two years at the Yale Cerebrovascular Lab (YCVL), where she contributed to a prospective clinical study examining autoregulation-guided blood pressure targets after endovascular thrombectomy. She also led a project investigating intraoperative cerebral oximetry “fingerprint” patterns during thrombectomy and their association with early neurological deterioration. She is currently involved in multiple projects focused on orthopedic and spine surgery outcomes research using large clinical datasets and machine learning approaches, including studies on perioperative risk prediction, timing of orthopedic intervention in polytrauma, and predictors of emergent spine surgery.
